In Moments, Govignon uses sensuous color to create a series of seductive and playful paintings.. He captures the fragmented images of our sometimes erotically-charged memories that have partially vanished or been glossed over. The compositions are fueled by fantasy and passionate experience.
In the painting, "Red Bikini" Govignon revisits his photograph of a young woman to capture the fleeting pleasures and overlapping memories of a weeklong vacation. The woman's figure disappears as she becomes lost in the moment, revealing layers of paint applied before her. The colors saturate the composition and permeate her body with the image coming in and out of focus like the salty waters at her feet.
"Early Morning" presents a young woman sitting on the edge of a bed; handkerchief in hand, she invites the viewer to engage with her. This painting , created from a previous life drawing, captures the fragile confidence of the model who has just abandoned her lover and awakens to start her life anew. Govignon translates his earlier drawing with vivid color to expose the energy and poignant feelings that surround this raw yet sensual moment, leaving the viewer to wonder about their own histories, myths, and memories.

In all of his work, what Govignon has found most fascinating is the creative process itself. His two and three-dimensional forms expose the experience of the creation of the artwork itself.
Govignon shares his vision and understanding of creativity's natural, passionate, and sometimes alchemical process with a new series of sculptural works in bronze, Celestial Offerings. In its final form it will be composed of wall and ceiling mounted sculptural reliefs, as well as free-standing and suspended three-dimensional forms. This environment seeks to embody a creative universe. Traveling constellations with circular voids dot the walls and ceilings of the space. From these seemingly circular voids, three-dimensional sculptures will emanate. As the shapes initiate from emptiness, they evoke a state of mind or being that offers unlimited potential for creation and positive energy. The void is often conceptualized as circular and most of the three-dimensional forms sculpted in this space are disc-like or circular in origin. The process of the creation of the sculptures themselves is kept evident in the ripped and torn textures that lead to flowing lava like forms. Images of nature and starry nights come to mind where abstracted spiraling figures dance and lotus flowers emanate.

Govignon’s abstract oil paintings are assembled visual fantasies that incorporate elements of time and space in perpetual transition. He manipulates color and texture on the canvas surface to reveal structure and illusory depth.
The paintings are at their base created with an emotional understanding of composition and the juxtaposition of color. The visceral energy related to a specific time and place is translated through sensory associations onto the canvas.
In creating ‘New York Hustle,’ Govignon sought out the color configurations and compositional architectures that he felt delineated a sense of New York City. With this in mind, he intuitively layered and fused areas of paint together to capture the aesthetic spirit of a moment. Looking at NYHustle, one sees an expressionistic cubist perspective, relating to a bird’s eye view of the Chrysler building, traffic lights, flying taxis, and a water tower within an architectural grid. Govignon’s experience enables the viewer to find consistent beauty in the energetic force and chaos of the city.

I create sculpture to enliven both people and environment with the belief that sculpture affects the senses and excites the soul. Through a geometric interplay of shape, texture, and color, my work depicts evolving stages of birth, growth, and liberation. I combine bronze, stainless, steel, aluminum, and glass elements into cathartic and explosive sculptures that embody an optimistic progression. The idea that there is internal life or energy all around us is presented abstractly through the use of energy containers, volumes, and frameworks such as pipes, cubes, or pyramidal forms. The resulting sculptures represent a spiritual life beyond themselves. They remind us that the divine exists in everything. I continue to create work with the understanding that sculpture is sensed or felt, that the medium stirs and arouses emotions and consequently improves the quality of our lives and our surroundings.

| Govignon explores the theme of 'Camouflage Hearts' with this new series of inspired paintings and sculptures that fuse his use of 2 and 3-D forms with explosive color. Govignon uses this image as a sign of the times that layers the themes of love, war, and global environment in an image that questions our vivid yet confusing ways of sharing our love and concern for all that coexists in our universe. |
